WHAT CAUSES LOUD NOISE IN PLUMBING PIPEWORK.

WHAT IS PLUMBING?

A set of tanks, pipes, connections, and other tools that are essential for the all-round sanitation, water supply and heating in a building.

In this topic today, we will discuss what causes that banging noises in your Plumbing Pipework?

Plumbing pipework shouldn’t make much noise apart from the gentle sound of water flowing through the pipes. This issue can take place on either central heating or cold water pipes.

If after you open or shut a tap or a valve and you hear a sound, or a banging noise, you MUST NOT disregard or ignore it.

WHAT CAUSES BANGING NOISES IN PLUMBING PIPEWORK.

When a tap is turned on or off, if you hear a weird vibrating or banging sound it’s commonly because of hydraulic shock in your plumbing pipework. Vibrations in pipes are the results of the banging noises you hear, they are usually caused by a rush of pressure in the plumbing system when you open a valve or tap.

Hydraulic Shocks are often known as ‘Water Hammer’. Water hammer can sometimes be created when a vacuum is established behind water. If you notice water persists to flow rapidly after closing a valve, this could establish a vacuum. As the flow of water becomes faster through the pipes, the greater the vibrations and shockwaves that are created.

Present-day plumbing valves or taps are not invented to start or stop a flow of water immediately. Over time, one of the habitual causes for hydraulic shock to develop is typically wear on a tap or valve. The fittings in the valve start to jump, this results in the swift increase on the water pressure. E.g, a faulty kitchen valve or tap located downstairs could commonly be the cause of hydraulic shock upstairs. It’s also not in all instances that valves or taps nearest to the vibrating/banging noises are what’s triggering the issues.

ASK YOURSELF, DO I NEED TO GET A NOISY PIPES FIXED?

Did you know that hydraulic shock can be created in either plastic or metal pipework? It is generally more apparent in metal pipework due to the ability of metal to convey sound more effectively compared to plastic. If you are experiencing hydraulic shock problems, our home improvement team at IQueue Property Solutions will be able to resolve this problem for you as soon as possible.

In multiple severe cases of hydraulic shock, pipes can rupture and cause water damages, or possibly flooding inside your properties which can destroy your belongings, appliances etc. The swift pressure enlarges, and resulting vibrations, which stresses the joints, fixings and pipework. If vibrations have increased, it means that the banging noise in your pipes has also increased overtime. An increase in vibrations will also increase the likelihood of cracks.

SOLUTIONS TO STOP THE BANGING NOISE PROBLEMS:

An experienced professional Plumber or Heating Engineer will be able to find out the root cause of the problem. They will make some changes to the plumbing system to stop the problem. Actions can be taken to slow the flow of water where the pressure build-up is occurring. Fitting a new valve/tap that closes slowly and/or a hydraulic shock arrestor will fix the issue. Checking pipework are fixed securely in place, will help to prevent further movement and a solution to stop the banging noise.

In conclusion, it’s important to mention that some combi-boilers seem to be affected more by water hammer than others. If it happens, fine cracks can appear within the manifold which will result in leaking.
